Palace Theater opens.

October 1, 1888

Originally Austin’s Nickelodeon Museum, it is located near today’s 15 Sudbury Street (then 109 – 113 Court Street). The theater seats 1,100 and the building’s second floor had been the location of Alexander Graham Bell’s laboratory in 1875. It becomes the Palace Theatre on Memorial Day 1891 and later the Trocadero Theatre. Performers would include Al Jolson, Weber and Fields, Mack Sennett, Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice and Will Rogers. It is demolished in April 1931, but a portion of the attic where Bell’s laboratory was located is saved.
